Chris Bell - EGGrings

Lotus bike Chris designed and made round and oval EGGrings from 1988 until 2011. These were some of the very best chainrings available at that time, every one unique, individually milled to each customer's specification.

A round EGGring was used on the Burrows / Boardman gold-medal 'Superbike' which was exhibited in London's Science Museum and Millenium Dome. EGGrings have also been used by other Olympic gold-medallists and by many prominent round-the-World cycletourists.

EGGring features

Any size: from 11 to 110 teeth
Any shape: round, oval or asymmetric
Any crank: 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 arm / current or obsolete / single, double, triple or quad
Any chain: 3/32", 1/8", 1", 8mm or 10mm / 5sp, 6sp, 7sp, 8sp, 9sp, 10sp or 11sp

Full-profile teeth: for better chain engagement and longer life
Shift-gates and inner chamfer: to aid front derailleur shifts
Catch-pin on 'outer' rings: to stop the chain jamming after over-shifts
Tall teeth on 'single' rings: to reduce the chance of the chain jumping off

Hard aerospace alloy: lightweight and longer lasting
CNC accuracy: to run absolutely true

Tripleizer EGGrings

Tripleizer

Fitted in a crank's inner position, a Tripleizer provided an extra set of bolt holes to attach a third, smaller chainring.

These chainrings converted a double crank into a triple one.

I remember being MOST impressed with your chainrings which we used on the two Greenspeeds which were ridden 15,000 kms around Oz about 1993. We used your 62t rings as the main ring and 42 t Shimano rings as the low ring. The riders found that while most cyclists needed to change their transmissions 1/2 way round, theirs lasted the full distance. Furthermore we found that while the 42t ring was used only about 10% of the time, it and the chain were worn out, while the main 62t Egg ring was as good as new!

I have one Highpath chainring - on my Mountain Drive equipped upright Brompton. This was the 3rd chainring I've put on - the first two did not last for long at all (300 miles and 1,750 miles) as they developed sideways distortions. My Highpath chainring has lasted 5,500 miles and shows little sign of wear and is still true.

I've just gone through the once-every-two-year drivetrain replacement on my Greenspeed commuting trike. This machine clocks up around 3000 miles/year, is commuting in all weathers (damp UK winters) and spends its days parked outside. I'm afraid that I don't look after it as well as I should. Yet again, a brand new chain and cassette goes on and still the 10 year old chainring you made for me is again a perfect snug fit - no sign of wear at all! Thanks for a great piece of kit!
